Art
Art contributes to the education of the whole person. It allows us to see ourselves as unique individuals who can think creatively through a variety of experiences with materials, tools and techniques. Our goal is to develp and enhance the capacity of a child's creative spirit through exploration, production and interpretation of art experiences while meeting the expresive needs of the student. Using visual communication, students develop a sensitivity and appreciation for a fuller understanding of life, self and others as part of a global society. Art records and reflects historical and cultural perspectives. Students learn to make connections between visual arts and other disciplines. Our students in grades 1 through 5 receive 45 minutes of art instruction each week.
Music
Music provides a source of understanding and knowledge about ourselves and the world around us. Every child needs to be given the opportunity to develop his innate musical potential to the highest level possible though singing, listening, playing instruments, moving to music, creating music, studying composers and understanding traditional music of the United States and other cultures. Each of our first through fifth grade students receives 40 minutes of music instruction per week. Our young vocalists also perform in concerts in December and in the spring. Students in grades 3 through 5 may also choose to participate in Chorus, which meets one morning a week before the school day begins.
Band
All students in fifth grade are given the opportunity to participate in the Whittier Band program. The band features flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium and percussion. Children need not have previous instrument experience. Instrument selection is made with the assistance of the band director. Repetoire includes selections for Essential Elements 2000 - Book 1, First Performances and sheet music, including the ever famous "Let's Go Band." A variety of styles including classical, country, Latin, rock and folk music are studied. Group instruction is provided once a week for individual instruments and the entire band practices together once a week. The Whittier Band performs in concert several times a year.
Orchestra
Fourth and fifth grade students may choose to participate in the orchestra program. Orchestra is a fee-based program and involves a small group lesson during the school day and a full orchestra practice before or after school. Orchestra students perform in a number of concerts throughout the school year.
