Our library consists of over 24,000 volumes of books, magazines and audio-visual materials, all of which are available to Whittier staff and students. The library is open throughout the school day from 8:30 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m.
All students visit the library at least once a week and have the opportunity to select and check out books. Kindergartners may check out one book at a time. First and second graders may check out two books at a time, while students in grades 3, 4 and 5 may check out three books at once. Students are encouraged to reserve books that they'd like to read, but that are unavailable at their check out time.
No fines are assessed for overdue books. If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, the student will be asked to pay for the replacement cost of the book.
All grade levels visit the library for lessons with the librarian that are integrated, curriculum based and address Illinois State Standards. These lessons encourage higher order thinking skills and problem solving strategies, as well as literature appreciation. Students in kindergarten through second grade have 30 minutes of library time at a set time each week. Students in grades 3-5 are on a flexible schedule and the instructional time varies from week to week. The classroom teacher and the librarian plan the lessons collaboratively. In addition, these students have a set weekly book check out time.
We are proud to have a parent section also in our library. The Parent Center contains books, audio and videotapes which may be checked out by Whittier parents.
Volunteers are always welcome to help us with our daily tasks. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. Cheryl Jones at 682-2186.
